The initiative began in 2015, when Freiburg dancers, choreographers, performers and artists of different ages and backgrounds, at different points in their professional development and with different needs, worked on a common vision: Innovative artistic personalities should once again find a space to develop in Freiburg and feel invited to stay, to interact with each other and to network nationally and internationally.

After intensive preparatory work and a discovery phase, a comprehensive "Cooperative Dance Development Concept (for) Freiburg" was developed in 2017 and presented to Freiburg City Council by bewegungs-art freiburg e.V. as the supporting association for institutional funding. This formed the prerequisites and base for a cooperation between the Cultural Office, E-WERK and bewegungs-art // tanznetz|freiburg to receive the funding from TANZPAKT Stadt-Land-Bund for three years (2018-2021). With this they could develop and secure basic organizational and networking structures, further education offers and artistic formats.

Tanznetz Freiburg gUG represents the further development of tanznetz|freiburg. The new legal form of the non-profit entrepreneurial company (LLC - limited liability company) exists since the beginning of 2022 and gives Tanznetz Freiburg its own corporate body. It operates with a new office, two managing directors and a public relations department. Also directly involved is an advisory board of 10 dance professionals, which provides advice to Tanznetz Freiburg as well as many other dance professionals who are brought in to implement individual projects and formats as needed.
The goal is to further increase the professionalization of dance creators and the quality of productions as well as to make them visible beyond the city and state borders. This will create a sustainable, viable structure in independent contemporary dance for Freiburg and the region.
